Del Bel is back with a new album called III, its boldest and most experimental effort yet.
You might be familiar with the Toronto-based orchestral pop band, or more specifically the torchy, haunting vocals of singer/lyricist Lisa Conway, who has been in other indie bands such as Chrome and the Ice Queen and the Owle Bird, and also puts out music under the name L Con. Producer/composer Tyler Belluz adds a distinct pop noir sound to the mix, with his moody, cinematic arrangements.
This is Del Bel's third studio album, and it shows the band experimenting with collaboration, teaming up with with rapper Clairmont the Second on the sultry, dramatic first single from the album, “Do What the Bass Says.” It's is a great example of how the band is stepping out of its comfort zone but still able to stay true to its sound.
"We are continually trying to challenge and push ourselves, and grow," Conway told us earlier this year via email. "I've always felt very comfortable writing in linear and fairly abstract song-forms, though I think overall this album is pretty accessible.”
Other highlights on the album include the hauntingly groovy “Crookshank” and the smoky, dark “Only Breathing.” We have III streaming here a week ahead of its release date.
Del Bel will release III on April 7 via Missed Connections Records. Pre-order it here.
