A lot of labels get thrown around when people talk about the Strumbellas: folk pop grass, sonic roots and even rock noir. One thing is sure, the Strumbellas have what most bands want: its own sound. A Strumbellas song often has lots of instrumental layers. It also has harmonies that practically vibrate and lyrics that make you want to sing along. Or dance.
The band's latest release Hope, will keep fans grooving. That's also true for the My Playlist show that lead singer and frontman, Simon Ward has put together. But as you might expect, there are some seriously poignant moments too. Ward says what he thinks and doesn't have much of a filter. How refreshing is that?
Like most of the six members of the band, he comes from Lindsay, Ontario, better known for its lakes, rocks and trees. And Lindsay figures fairly prominently in Ward's My Playlist show as well, in a good way.
Listen to Ward as he shares his favourite songs and the stories behind his selections from artists such as Great Lake Swimmers, Deep Dark Woods, Ryan Adams, Bedouin Soundclash, the Skydiggers and more.
