In 2005, Toronto-born Justin Rutledge was heading towards a degree in English lit, with a major in modern poetry. Then, music took over his life. At the time he said he could always go back and finish it if music didn’t work out. Luckily for us, it’s worked out just fine.
But those literary roots never left him. Rutledge writes lyrics that are elegant, evocative and not unlike poems. There’s a timeless quality to his subject matter and an intimacy in his delivery. The music often works to frame the words, not take over them.
You can tell Rutledge still appreciates his literary background by the choices he made for his My Playlist show, which includes artists such as Leonard Cohen, Gram Parsons, Rheostatics and more!
