One of Canada’s most celebrated country artists hosts this edition of My Playlist. Alberta-born Paul Brandt is poised to win his ninth Juno award at this Sunday’s gala in Calgary. In fact, when you think of Canadian country music, his name is often the first on the list.
So what’s jazz singer Holly Cole doing on his playlist? Turns out Brandt has had a soft spot for vocal jazz ever since he attended Crescent Heights High School in Airdre, Alberta. He was even part of a vocal jazz ensemble there. So along with Steve Earle, Johnny Cash and Blue Rodeo, there’s the Holly Cole Trio’s recording of “Cry (If I Want To).”
Who knows? Maybe Brandt could have given Michael Buble a run for his money.
