My Playlist: Kiran Ahluwalia on her personal tastes from Rush to Tinariwen

By
Carole Warren

Two-time Juno winner, Kiran Ahluwalia is known for her crystal clear voice that soars over changing rhythms and blurred musical boundaries. Growing up in Delhi, India she studied Indian classical music -- in particular a song form called ghazal, based on Urdu poetry. When her family moved to Toronto, Ahluwalia immersed herself in all-things Canadian -- including the rock band, Rush.

Naturally, Rush is included in Ahluwalia's playlist, along with music by Farida Khanum, Saharan blues band Tinariwen (with whom she often collaborates), Jane Bunnett and Ahluwalia's husband and musical partner -- jazz guitarist Rez Abbasi.

Ahluwalia’s latest recording, Sanata : Stillness is a hybrid of Indian and Pakistani grooves, Saharan blues and western jazz. She brings together all of these influences to create music that is uniquely her own.

Listen to Ahluwalia share her favourite selections and the stories behind her choices as she hosts My Playlist.
