Beyoncé surprised audiences at Sunday night’s BET Awards by kicking off the event with a performance of her Lemonade cut “Freedom.” Performing on a stage covered in water with a number of dancers, something she has regularly done during her Formation world tour, the pop star stunned the crowd with one of the most political songs off her new album.

The performance was completed with rapper Kendrick Lamar, who provides a guest verse on the recorded version of “Freedom.” Rising up from the floor, Lamar adds a few additional verses to the song live, including, “Meet me at the finish line/ 40 acres give me mine/ revolution televised hoping that you see the signs.”

This marks the first time Beyoncé and Lamar have performed “Freedom” together. Watch the full performance here.
