Last week, Zaki Ibrahim released a new song called “Do the Thing Right,” her first new solo material since the release of her 2012 Polaris Prize-shortlisted album, Every Opposite. Now, a week later, the Victoria, B.C., artist has covered Canadian icon Leonard Cohen’s 2011 song, “Show me the Place.”
The cover is a new addition to the Polaris Music Prize’s cover sessions, following covers by Joel Plaskett, Arkells, Whitehorse and more. In this new session, Ibrahim adds drum pad beats to the original track’s piano and string arrangement. She also quickly broke down why she loves this song: “The words are quite strong. It’s like paralleling love as if it were an addiction and as if you were a slave to that love. It strikes a chord on many levels.”
Watch the cover below and don't forget to tune in to CBC Music's Facebook page this morning (July 14) at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT as we live stream the Polaris Music Prize short list announcement.
