Marvin's Room is a weekly show that explores the world of R&B. The program airs on CBC Radio 2 every Friday at 7:00 p.m. as well as 3:00 p.m on SiriusXM.
Marvin's Room with Amanda Parris on CBC, explores the world of R&B
Our show is inspired by legendary soul singer Marvin Gaye and by Canada’s golden boy Drake, but today I feel like shaking things up a bit. On this edition of Marvin’s Room you’ll be hearing from quite a few of the ladies who have shaped the sound of R&B and are pushing the boundaries of what it can be
I Wanna Dance With Somebody
It wasn’t “I Will Always Love You” or “Greatest Love of All”, it was this, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”. This was the song that made the tears come. Dancing through tears, sometimes that’s the way to do it. Rest in peace to the legend Whitney Houston.
Losing You
When Solange released her album "A Seat at the Table" earlier this year the world, including me, went nuts. Every element has been dissected. From the design of the lyric book, to the art direction of her music videos. Everyone seems shocked that Beyonce’s younger sister has created a work of such artistic depth. But for those of us who’ve been Solange fans for a while now we know that this isn’t the first time she’s created cutting-edge work.
When she released the song “Losing You” a few years ago it came hand in hand with a music video unlike any you’ve ever seen shot in Cape Town, South Africa, featuring the dapper dandy style of the Congolese Sapeurs.
It was a visual and sonic feast of colour, style, innovation and attitude, basically Solange’s standard M.O.
Here she is with “Losing You.”
Sentimental
In the 90’s it seemed like every singer had a video that took place in a lounge of some sort. Lights low, people dressed in earth tones, swaying to the rhythm. Canadian R&B legend Deborah Cox had her lounge vibe covered for her song ‘Sentimental’, complete with a very handsome love interest in actor Omar Epps. This was back when he had a ton of swag! Let’s go back to that lounge and groove out with Omar and Deborah.
