Love T.K.O

People often talk about Hip Hop beefs and there are legendary ones, Tupac and Biggie, Jay Z and Nas, but what about R&B beefs? The beef between Teddy Pendergrass and Marvin Gaye is an epic tale of betrayal, paranoia and tragedy. When Teddy Pendergrass decided to leave Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes to start his solo career it wasn’t long before the media began calling Teddy the next Marvin Gaye, he’d borrowed Marvin’s sensual sound, even dressing like Marvin. The final straw? Teddy grew a beard like Marvin’s, Teddy’s songs were shooting up the charts his tours were sold out, and he was dubbed the new sex symbol of R&B.

Marvin Gaye hated him. In Teddy he saw all of his failures. With each album flop Marvin sunk deeper into depression and fixated his frustrations on Teddy to add salt to the wound Marvin’s ex-wife Janice began dating Teddy. So of course Marvin began stalking the couple parking his car outside restaurants where they were eating and sending dead roses to Teddy at his performances. When Teddy released the song Love T.K.O, a lot of people saw it as a not-so-subtle jab at Marvin. You’ve had the betrayal, the pariona and now the tragedy. Just four years after the release of Love T.K.O Marvin was dead, murdered by his father and Teddy was in a wheelchair paralyzed from the chest down after he crashed his car. As with most rivalries there was no winner in the battle to be the ultimate R&B love man. Right now we’re going to take it back to the original R&B diss record.

LWY (Life Without You)

After spending years supporting Canadian artists as a television host on MTV, developing the open mic series The Known Unknown, and creating the podcast series Gyalcast, Tika Simone is finally focusing on her own voice. In 2016 she released the EP "Carry On" and we're definitely fans over here in Marvin's Room.

Also check out Tika on this track "Tenfold" and a video which features other Canadian artists we've had in Marvin's Room, Jessie Reyez & Adria Kain.
