Who Do U Love

Here in Canada you can’t talk about the R&B scene in the 90’s without Deborah Cox. She’s a legend in the world of Canadian R&B. I was just 10 years old when I first heard her incredible voice.
Her music video for her 1995 song “Who Do U Love?” was playing on Much Music. I ran to the VCR, pressed record and for the next 3 weeks, that VHS was played over and over as I studied and nailed those dance moves. Deborah Cox has been a force in Canadian R&B forever. She’s won several Juno’s and Soul Train Music Awards, performed on Broadway and started her own record label. If it’s been a while since you’ve heard her voice, here’s your throwback moment.

Rise Up

Andra Day was discovered by none other than Stevie Wonder – now there’s a recipe for success. She was sitting at home one day when the phone rang and Stevie Wonder was on the other line
calling to tell her he loved her. Can you imagine? His wife had stumbled onto a video of Andra Day performing and he immediately found her and hooked her up with his producer. It’s like a Hollywood film. Andra Day’s look is Billie Holiday meets Rosie the Riveter and her sound is as vast and expansive, flowing from doo-wop to jazz to soul. People are crazy about her inspirational anthem ‘Rise Up’ and are still talking about her performanceat last year’s Grammy Awards.
