Take A Message

In the early 2000’s, Canada was shaping its own neo-soul sound and one of the primary architects was a young singer from Winnipeg named Remy Shand. The start of his career unfolds like a Hollywood movie. Picture this: He’s a young up and coming singer before the days of YouTube and Soundcloud. So how did he get his music out there? He sent his demo to a record label and they were impressed. He was signed almost immediately to Motown Records. His first album The Way I Feel was celebrated by the critics. He received 4 Grammy nominations and then won the Juno for best R&B/Soul Recording. Everyone expected his star to only get bigger and the expectations were high for his follow-up album Day in the Shade. Instead Remy decided to take a 10 year hiatus from music. When he came back he decided to do things his own way. He created his own record label and has been releasing a steady stream of music ever since, all on his own terms, at his own pace. Here is a classic from Remy Shand, his hit song “Take a Message.”

Lost Boy

Ruth B is a University student in Edmonton with an affinity for two things: The television show "Once Upon a Time" and 6-second Vine videos. Little did she know that both of those things would lead to a life-changing experiment. One day she was watching an episode of "Once Upon a Time". It’s a tv show inspired by childhood fairytales. A lyric popped into Ruth B.’s head and wouldn’t go away. She’d never written a song before but she decided to try. So she sat down at a keyboard and recorded a 6-second video where she sang this line “I am a lost boy from Neverland...Usually hanging out with Peter Pan.”

That video went viral. So Ruth B decided to keep building the song, in 6-second increments that she uploaded to Vine. With each video, her following grew. She named the song “Lost Boy.” It became a breakthrough hit cracking the top 50 of the Billboard charts last year. Since then she has signed a recording contract with Columbia Records. “Lost Boy” has become Ruth B.’s very own fairytale.
