This week's episode of The Strombo Show runs the gamut by exploring the musical mind of Sampha, filling the House with the orchestral rock of Common Deer and sharing a conversation with the president of Sunrise Records, Doug Putman.
Sampha has collaborated with Drake, Frank Ocean, Kanye West and Solange, and he has gone it alone with his solo debut album, Process. He discusses the inception of the album, his transition from producer to songwriter, finding inspiration in Kwes, masculinity in modern music, feeling challenged by D'Angelo, his relationship with Drake and what he taught Kanye. It's pure musical delight.
Common Deer delivers its brand of orchestral rock from the living room and delivers an Against Me! cover that Laura Jane Grace endorsed herself. The Toronto-based five-piece features two sets of siblings and a vocal delivery that recalls Stars' Set Yourself on Fire. The band's cozy Strombo session heralds a beginning, as Common Deer commemorates its debut EP.
The president of Sunrise Records, Doug Putman, visits to reveal his company's plans to grow the record industry in Canada. Earlier this week, Sunrise revealed that it'll find a new home within 70 former HMV locations and is actively signing former HMV employees to its roster. Putman explains why, recalls his first album purchase and commends the necessity of independent record stores like Cheapies in Hamilton and Sonic Boom in Toronto.
