First Play Live: Amelia Curran, Watershed

By
Ron Skinner

Watershed is defined as "an event or period marking a turning point in a course of action or state of affairs." And so it is apt that Amelia Curran has chosen the word as the title of her eighth and latest album.

While the casual listener may not notice a big change, the album, like all of Curran's work, is still a beautiful collection of well-crafted songs. But dig a bit beneath the surface of the melodies and you will find Curran tackling some pretty big issues. Themes of mental illness and gender equality fill the album, with a directness that Curran has not shown before. It's a directness and openness that make for a collection of powerfully beautiful songs.
