Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter LP had a surprise hit late last year with her single “Lost on You,” the folk elegy about a failed relationship that went viral with more than 131 million views on YouTube.

But that wasn’t the only surprise to come out of her 2016 five-song EP, Death Valley. That summer, LP greeted listeners with a sharply different sound when Orange is the New Black selected her moody, gospel-infused “Muddy Waters” for its emotionally charged Season 4 finale.

She talked to us about the inspiration behind “Muddy Waters”, and how she feels about her music being featured on the hit Netflix prison drama.

LP’s latest full-length album, Lost on You, features both “Lost on You” and “Muddy Waters” and is available here.
