You'll love this violin cover of 'Marietta's Song' from Korngold's Die tote Stadt

By
Robert Rowat

Musicians often turn to opera when they're looking for beautiful and surprising pieces to play as encores.

When we invited violinist Mark Fewer and pianist Chiharu Iinuma to play a "party piece" in our Vancouver studio, they settled on "Marietta's Song" from Act 1 of Korngold's best-known opera, Die tote Stadt. The soprano/tenor line from the original duet suits Fewer's robust tone, and Iinuma captures the ethereal atmosphere of Korngold's deft orchestration.

Enjoy!
