Listen to the June 28, 2015, episode of the Strombo Show.
"If you could read my mind love, what a tale my thoughts could tell."
The Strombo Show runs the gamut this Sunday night, keeping the spirit of radio alive by delivering the best records in the best order. It's a show for music lovers by music lovers, ranging over three hours of commercial-free music to honour both old and new.
George Stroumboulopoulos is joined by the legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot for a rare, intimate interview and the Polaris-nominated Braids will perform an exclusive acoustic session as part of our annual Canada Day special.
Lightfoot once said about music, "I'm a little nuts. I'm a lot nuts. All I know is that in the midst of the madness of this world, it's my therapy." He’s the singer-songwriter’s singer-songwriter who has been releasing records for more than 50 years. His extensive catalogue includes songs like "If You Could Read My Mind," "Sundown," "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Carefree Highway" that have earned him Grammy nominations, Juno Awards and have been covered and celebrated by Dylan, Cash, Presley and Streisand, among others. He’s also a father, who brings his youngest to taekwondo.
Lightfoot joins George to explore his life, share his thoughts of the current musical world and what's next.
Braids recently released their third studio album, Deep in the Iris, which trips into a more accessible realm of instrumentation, exchanging synths for ivories. Their standout track, "Miniskirt," is a gender equality declaration that challenges themes of pornography and abuse. They'll perform the song and sit down for a feature conversation in the House of Strombo.
To celebrate the birth of our nation, we'll road trip from east to west coast, diving into the musical range of our provinces and territories with a few special guests that include CBC Radio's Tom Power.
Lock it. Crank it. Join the collective!
