While John Abberger lives quite happily in the 21st century, the musician side of Abberger is more at home in early 18th century Europe. Abberger is a devoted student of the German Baroque period - a place and time in music history when the oboe was earning its place in the orchestra.
It's fitting then, that Abberger's first recordings as a leader have featured him in music of his beloved Johann Sebastian Bach. As one of North America's leading performers on historical oboes, Abberger has been principal oboist of Toronto's world-renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra since 1989. He holds the same position with the American Bach Soloists in San Francisco and he appears regularly with many other prominent period-instrument ensembles.
A native of Orlando, Florida, Abberger studied mainly at the Julliard School and at Louisiana State University. Currently Abberger teaches at the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario.
On this edition of This Is My Music, Abberger shares the music he loves and the reasons behind his selections.
