By
Cathy Irving

When Sarah Jeffrey won the position of Principal Oboe of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2005, it marked a homecoming for her. Jeffrey was born in Toronto and had played in the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. She studied at the University of Toronto with former T.S.O. Principal Oboe, Richard Dorsey. After that, Jeffrey earned a Master's Degree at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Then she spent several years as Principal Oboe of the symphony orchestras in Kitchener-Waterloo, Québec and Windsor, before joining the T.S.O.

In addition to her orchestral work, Jeffrey is an active chamber musician with the likes of Trio Arkel and Amici Chamber Ensemble. As well, she is a regular guest soloist with various orchestras. One of her personal highlights was performing Bach's Concerto for Oboe and Violin with James Ehnes and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Jeffrey is also a dedicated teacher of the oboe and of chamber music. She serves on the faculties of the University of Toronto and the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music.

On this edition of This Is My Music, Jeffrey shares the music that inspires her, along with the stories behind her selections.

This Is My Music is heard Saturdays on Radio 2 at 10:00 am.
