While Tanya Tagaq released a best-selling novel last year, we haven't had a new album from the experimental Inuk singer since 2016's Polaris shortlisted Retribution. But the wait is over: Tagaq will release Toothsayer, a five-song EP, on March 1 via Six Shooter Records.
Tagaq created the music for the National Maritime Museum's Polar Winds exhibit in London, England. The title links back to Tagaq's 2017 novel, Split Tooth, a mythobiography about a girl growing up in Nunavut in the 1970s.
“I named this Toothsayer because I always liked the term soothsayer, to look into the future and to speak wisely,” Tagaq explained in a statement. “Teeth represent protection and hunting in nature. We are going to have to get our fists up and our teeth out to carve our way to survival in this world.”
Tagaq worked with longtime musical partner and percussionist Jean Martin for the EP, as well as U.K. electronic artist Ash Koosha. "Snowblind," a chilling track about the sensory experience of snowblindness, is the lead single. Listen to it below.
