After promising fans that new music was "imminent" last year, Canadian electro-pop artist Grimes has announced her new album, Miss_Anthropocene.
Grimes took to social media to make the announcement on Tuesday evening because she wanted to get ahead of her "first interview in a few years" that was published today on the Wall Street Journal Magazine.

Included in her post were the definitions of the words "misanthrope" and "Anthropocene," the two words she combines for her album title. She goes on to detail this new concept album which is about "the anthropomorphic goddess of climate change: a psychedelic, space-dwelling demon/beauty-queen who relishes the end of the world. She's composed of Ivory and Oil."
"Each song will be a different embodiment of human extinction as depicted through a pop star demonology," she continued. "The first song, 'We Appreciate Power,' introduced the pro-AI-propaganda girl group who embody our potential enslavement/destruction at the bands of Artificial General Intelligence." This album was written, produced and engineered entirely by Grimes, with the exception of one track.
Last week, Grimes dropped a demo of a song called "Pretty Dark," which likely won't be on Miss_Anthropocene, and in her announcement, she assures fans that she will continue to release non-album tracks that will be more "synth-based" since her official album will veer towards "mostly ethereal nu metal (ish)."
Grimes concludes her post with a note on climage change, a topic that appears to be heavily explored on the new album. "Climate change is something I'm only ever confronted with in a sad/guilty way," she wrote. "So my goal is to make climate change fun (lol..??) [...] So maybe it'll be a bit easier to look at if it can exist as a character and not just abstract doom."
